Air
is a vital component for the living organisms in soil.
A healthy soil should contain 25% air. Rainfall and
fluctuating groundwater levels stimulate the absorption of
fresh oxygen-rich air into the soil, while other gaseous
by-products of plant respiration are released (eg: carbon
dioxide).
Without an active soil biology and good soil structure,
this exchange of gases will be severely impaired and water
retention will be poor. This will impede good root
penetration, causing plants to suffer from water and
nutrient stress.
A major impediment to effective soil aeration is the
development of a hard pan. Compacted soils and those with a
hard pan, will benefit greatly from Superworm Mechanical
Aerator.
The Superworm punctures and cracks compacted soils enabling
better water penetration and reduced run-off, greater root
growth and microbial activity.
Together with the right mineral amendments, aeration will
lead to a deeper, more fertile soil with an open structure.
